Our CEO, Mariya George, wrote the cover feature for GTR’s Issue 3, 2026, on why domain-specific AI is winning over general-purpose models in trade finance. Here are the themes, in brief.
This feature appeared as sponsored content in GTR. Themes are summarized below; read the original for the full piece.
Four Shifts Changed What Banks Expect from AI
- Accountability, not curiosity: explainability and model risk management are no longer differentiators. They are table stakes for any deployment a board will sign off on.
- Reasoning, not automation: trade finance runs on unstructured documents and sanctions exposure. That needs contextual reasoning, not a routing script.
- Domain AI wins: a model with no grounding in UCP 600 or discrepancy criteria is not just inaccurate. In a regulated bank, it is a liability.
- Speed beats scale: agile banks with the right AI partnership now outmanoeuvre institutions many times their size.

What Is Real, and What Is a Slide Deck
What’s real:
- Agentic workflows that ingest a full letter of credit package and cross-examine it against UCP 600, routing exceptions to a specialist.
- Multi-model orchestration, routing each document type and risk decision to the model built for that specific task.
- Real-time TBML and fraud reasoning that replaces static keyword matching with contextual pattern detection.
What’s overhyped:
- Fully autonomous decision-making. Trade finance carries legal interpretation and sovereign liability regulators will not delegate to a model.
- General-purpose LLMs pitched as complete solutions, without grounding in ISBP 745, back-to-back credits, or standby LC draw demands.
The Gap Nobody Talks About
Where the Infrastructure Is Heading
The end of paper-based processes: the Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023 and the UNCITRAL Model Law are turning the bill of lading into structured data a compliance engine can validate on ingestion.
Invisible, embedded compliance: document examination, TBML detection, and sanctions screening run concurrently at origination, generating an audit trail automatically instead of after the fact.
AI stops being a talking point: within three years, banks will stop discussing AI in trade finance as a separate initiative, for the same reason they stopped discussing cloud infrastructure as one.
